We’ve been thinking a lot about our process lately—how we work, what we work on, and why it matters. And there’s something I want to share. At Canvas of Colors, we run a consultancy, CoLabs, but we also have what we call our product studio, simply: Studio. No clever branding, just a space to experiment, learn, and make things happen.
The idea behind Studio is pretty simple. If we’re advising clients on product strategy, growth, and UX, we should be doing the same work ourselves. We need skin in the game. It’s not enough to just tell clients what to do. We have to know, deep down, that the advice we’re giving works—because we’ve tried it. That’s why we built Studio: a place where we can experiment, fail, succeed, and learn on our own terms.
Consultancies often run into a common trap: everything revolves around making the client happy. And don’t get me wrong, that’s important. You want the client to feel good about the work, to walk away feeling like they got what they paid for. But there’s another layer we’re interested in—the results. Did the advice work? Did the strategy lead to growth? Did the product launch successfully? We need to know why something worked or didn’t, and that only comes from experience.
That’s where Studio comes in. It gives us the chance to test ideas—how we capture new concepts, prioritize them, experiment with traction, and gauge market appetite. We have full control, so when we screw up, it’s on us. And when we succeed, that knowledge becomes part of what we bring to our clients.
There’s a huge difference between giving advice based on theory versus experience. With Studio, we’re not consultants—we’re practitioners. We’re building things, we’re refining processes, we’re testing assumptions. And because we’re doing this outside of client work, there’s no pressure to play it safe. We can take risks, try new approaches, and push boundaries. That freedom leads to breakthroughs, both for us and for the people we work with.
At the end of the day, we want to be the kind of company that doesn’t just talk about innovation but lives it. We don’t want to give advice from the sidelines—we want to be on the field, trying to solve the same problems we’re helping our clients solve. If we’re not practicing what we preach, then what’s the point?
We don’t have all the answers. We’re still figuring things out. But that’s exactly why Studio exists. It’s a learning ground, a place where we can keep growing and getting smarter. And that means, ultimately, we can give better advice, deliver better results, and help our clients navigate their challenges with a level of insight that comes from firsthand experience.
So, what’s the takeaway? It’s this: before we tell someone else what to do, we try it ourselves. We need that real-world feedback to know that what we’re offering is solid. Otherwise, it’s all just guesswork. And guesswork isn’t good enough.
That’s the why behind Studio. It keeps us honest, and it makes us better at what we do. And that’s the kind of company we want to be.
